Boiler Service Guide

Boilers should be serviced yearly to ensure they run as smoothly as possible. In this handy guide, we explain the steps you should take when looking to have your boiler serviced.

Getting a new boiler fitted and installed in your property can be a significant investment so it makes sense to look after it.

If you have a gas, LPG or oil boiler it is recommended that you have your boiler serviced every year to ensure it is working as expected in a safe way and to check that the system is working in a way that is not costing you money.

DO:

  • Get more than 1 quote - Take a look round and have a look at what a variety of different companies can offer you in terms of boiler servicing plans and prices. You could pick up a great deal, so don’t just limit yourself to the first one you find.
  • Check credentials - It is important that you check the credentials of the boiler engineer servicing your central heating system before they start working on your system. If you are having your gas boiler serviced you should looked to have the work carried out by a Gas Safe registered heating engineer/company.
  • Establish what is involved - Make sure you know exactly is involved in a boiler service at the company you have opted for. Not all companies included the same services so it is importantly to familiarise yourself with what you will be singing up to.
  • Read the boiler service report - Make sure you fully understand what the heating engineer is telling you in their final service report. Don't be put off by jargon - ask them to clarify any points in plain English. You can save a lot of time, stress and money by dealing with issues and problems before they escalate.
  • Bleed your radiators every autumn - Bleeding your radiators will makes sure your central heating system is working more efficiently and this will save you money off your heating bill in the long term.

DON'T

  • Ignore it - Avoid trying to save money by ignoring your boiler service. It will cost you a lot, lot more if something goes wrong and you need to replace your system Think more long term and nip problems in the bud before they occur – it offers great peace of mind too.
  • Poorly ventilate your boiler - Block the air supply to your boiler can lead to a build-up of Carbon monoxide, which ultimately can be deadly.
  • Lose money - A new boiler may seem like an expensive outlay but new High Efficiency Condensing Boilers are a lot more energy efficient than standard boilers and can save you a lot of time and money in the long term.
