What is an electric boiler and how do they work?

Unlike traditional gas and oil boilers, electric boilers use electricity to heat hot water. An electric boiler can be used to heat your homes radiators and hot water. The water runs through the system and is heated using a heating element, much like a kettle.

What are the advantages of installing an electric boiler?

  • Simple to service and maintain
  • Electric boilers are very quiet when running due to fewer moving parts in comparison to traditional boilers
  • As electric boilers are more compact in size and do not require a flue, they can be installed in more areas of your home.
  • They can be connected to the mains electricity supply or environmentally friendly electricity sources such as solar power

  • Are there any disadvantages to using an electric boiler?

    It may be difficult to find an electric boiler which can successfully provide enough hot water for much larger homes, as many electric boilers are only able to heat a limited amount of water at a time.

    Are there different types of electric boilers?

    There are many different types of electric boilers available to choose from, some of the most popular include;

    Direct Acting Electric boiler – Direct acting electric boilers are the most common type of boiler and are the most economical to install

    Storage Electric Boiler – Storage electric boilers are able to store heat to be used at a later point (these boilers have a tendency to be slightly larger in size

    Electric CPSU – A electric CPSU is a combined primary storage unit which can store water, heat radiators and produce a high volume of hot water quickly (these types of boilers are best suited to larger and commercial properties)

    Dry Core storage boiler – Dry core storage boilers are similar to storage electric boilers but are more flexible in the way of which they use and store energy

    Do electric boilers require a flue?

    Unlike traditional gas and oil powered boilers electric boilers do not emit harmful gasses and therefore they do not require a flue to be installed.

    How safe is an electric boiler?

    If installed by a reputable engineer, electric boilers are exceptionally safe as they do not produce any fumes or combustion gases such as Carbon Monoxide. There is also the added benefit of not requiring an annual gas safety certificate, as no gases are being used or produced.
