Winter Boiler Tips and New Boilers

With the prospect of a freezing cold winter on its way, the last thing you need is your boiler to fail leaving you shivering and huddling together to stay warm! That’s why it’s wise to check your boiler now to ensure that all is working well and will hold up during our cold spell. Here’s a few tips to ensure your boiler is running well, and some great boilers new to Direct Heating Supplies if your boiler won’t make it.

Boiler Checks

There are several simple boiler checks that you can carry out without the need for Gas Safe engineer. These inspections check for any obvious faults which could affect your boiler’s ability during the winter.

Check to see if there are any leaks from the boiler, the flue is accessible, and the vents are clear. If you have a pressure system you need to check the boiler pressure. If it is too low or high, then the boiler will be running less efficiently which will make your heating bills cost more.

One of the most important checks you can carry out is for the boiler flame. Ensure that it is bright and blue and not yellow. If this is the case, then call a Gas Safe engineer urgently as this could be a sign of carbon monoxide.

Radiators and Pipe Insulation

There’s no point in having a tip-top boiler if your radiators are inefficient or if they don’t work. Ensure that the heating output is consistent along the whole radiator, top to bottom and left to right. If you find there are cold spots, then you may need to bleed your radiators. This clears any excess air from the central heating system and makes the entire heater warm.

You should also ensure all your pipes are well insulated. This stops them from freezing when it is very cold and reduces heat loss; this will save you money.

Power flushes and Alternatives

A power flush is the most effective way of cleaning your radiators and heating system, but it is a big job. It flushes any sludge out of the pipes and radiators before refilling them with clean water and a corrosion inhibitor.

Magnetic filters are great alternatives to power flushes. These act like a constant power flush by filtering out magnetic and non-magnetic particles from the system. We supply a large range of filters to help stop sludge building up in your system at Direct Heating Supplies, from Fernox to Worcester, and you can find them here.

Boiler Service

A boiler service is very similar to one for a car. A Gas Safe engineer will inspect your boiler to see if there are any faults or potential faults. They can tell you if anything needs replacing and if anything may fail in the immediate future. A boiler service should be carried out annually to ensure that it is still running efficiently, but primarily safely.

Should your boiler need any new parts, or should you be advised to get a new one, then Direct Heating Supplies has what you need. We stock a huge range of boilers, boiler spares and other heating products so we will have the products for you.
